Costume and Riflemen's Parade

This costume parade was held for the first time in 1835, to honour the silver wedding anniversary of King Ludwig I and Therese of Bavaria, and since 1950 it has been held regularly and has become an excellent Oktoberfest event that is broadcast on live television all over the world.

This year the Costume and Riflemen’s Parade will be held on Sunday 17 September 2017 at 10.00 am. Almost 8000 participants parade from Maximiliansstraße through Munich city centre to the Oktoberfestplatz, exhibiting a number of costumes, traditions and folk dances from the German federal states and from European countries including Italy, Croatia, Austria, Poland and Switzerland. In colourful procession, the seven kilometre long parade contains a mixture of festively dressed game booth owners in traditional costume with riflemen, bands, historical local costume groups, marching and fanfare bands and colourful flag wavers. The splendid carts of the Munich breweries are part of this too, of course. More than 40 decorated festival carriages and coaches round off the magnificent picture. The Münchner Kindl adorns the horse at the head of the parade with Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter and Bavarian Minister President Horst Seehofer again as distinguished guests. The organiser of this impressive costume parade, which is one of the biggest in the world, is the Festring München e.V. which hands out a commemorative Munich Oktoberfest medal every year and publishes the Oktoberfest programme.
